Data Sources

Wyoming Adult Commercial Tobacco and Nicotine Survey (formerly known as Adult Tobacco Survey)

All Survey Data and most data shown in the County Profiles come from the Wyoming Adult Commercial Tobacco and Nicotine Survey. This standardized survey collects information on commercial tobacco and nicotine use prevalence and consumption, tobacco and nicotine cessation, exposure to secondhand smoke and secondhand aerosol from vaping devices, and attitudes toward tobacco and nicotine policies. WYSAC has administered this survey 13 times since 2002 under contract with the Wyoming Department of Health. Since 2023, WYSAC and the WDH have agreed to change the data collection from a phone survey to a mix of phone and online data collection (see 2023 main report for details). For most items, WYSAC combined the 2023 and 2025 data files to produce county-level estimates. But for some, the change in data collection coincided with changes to item content that prevented this blending.

Prevention Needs Assessment

The percentage of high school students who smoked or vaped in the last 30 days on the County Profiles comes from the Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA). WYSAC administers the PNA under contract to the Wyoming Department of Health as a biennial survey of all 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students enrolled in public schools in the state of Wyoming. It represents an in-depth look at substance use, including tobacco use, among Wyoming youth.
